In 1985, a small group of Irish immigrants looked at a vacant former college building on Knox Avenue in Chicago’s Mayfair neighborhood and saw something most people would not have. They saw a home.
Not a home for themselves, but a home for a culture. A place where Irish and Irish American traditions could be kept alive, shared with the next generation, and woven into the fabric of Chicago’s story.
That dream became the Irish American Heritage Center. And four decades later, it is still going.
The Irish American Heritage Center (IAHC) is one of the largest Irish cultural centers in North America. They occupy a 90,000 square foot historic building in Chicago’s Mayfair neighborhood and serve thousands of visitors every year through more than 200 annual events.
Their mission is to nurture and strengthen Irish culture and heritage, foster an appreciation of Irish and Irish American life, and create an enduring cultural community in the greater Chicago area. They do that through music, dance, language, art, theater, and the traditions that connect people to something larger than themselves.
With over 5,000 members and counting, IAHC is not a museum piece. It is a living, active community.
The story of IAHC is one of the better origin stories in Chicago nonprofit history.
In 1985, a group of dedicated Irish Americans purchased the former Mayfair College building on Knox Avenue with a vision: to create a permanent home for Irish culture in Chicago. What followed was one of the most impressive volunteer efforts you will find anywhere.
Between 1986 and 1990, hundreds of volunteers poured thousands of hours into renovating the 90,000-square-foot building, transforming old classrooms into performance halls, galleries, and gathering spaces. No outside developer. No corporate renovation budget. Just a community that believed in something and showed up to build it.
The Center officially opened its doors in 1991 and has been growing ever since.
IAHC is not a single program or a single event. It is a complete cultural ecosystem housed within one remarkable building.
Mayfair Theatre
The centerpiece of the Center, the Mayfair Theatre hosts world-class performances, concerts, and cultural events year-round. From traditional Irish music to contemporary theater, it is one of Chicago’s most distinctive live performance venues.
Library and Archives
IAHC maintains an extensive collection of Irish and Irish American history, genealogy resources, and rare texts. For anyone tracing their roots or researching Irish American life in Chicago, this is an invaluable resource.
Celtic Heritage Gallery
The gallery features rotating exhibitions of traditional Celtic art, contemporary Irish artists, and cultural artifacts. It is a place where the visual history of Irish culture is kept visible and accessible.
Music and Dance
From set dancing to traditional music sessions, IAHC keeps the living traditions of Irish music and dance active and participatory. These are not performances you watch from a distance. They are traditions you can join.
Fifth Province Pub
The Fifth Province is a gathering place in the truest sense. A warm, welcoming pub where conversation, live music, and Irish hospitality come together. It is the kind of place that makes a cultural center feel like a neighborhood.

There is a quote on the IAHC website that has stayed with us: “A place is not just a place. It is the sum of all the people who have passed through it.”
That is exactly what the Irish American Heritage Center is. Forty years of people showing up, building something, and passing it forward. Volunteers who gave their weekends to renovate a building. Musicians who kept playing. Teachers who kept teaching. Community members who kept coming back.
If you want to be part of something worth showing up for since 1985, this is a good place to start.
